Through the journey of life we keep developing as individuals. As part of this path we invariably face difficult circumstances and we respond by using inner “tools” we have gained throughout our lives. Sometimes these “tools” are not effective enough and we react by experiencing anxieties or depressions. Phobias, Panic Disorders or Obsessive Compulsive Disorders as well as Depressions are all very frightening and disabling conditions.
Sometimes, severe traumatic experiences in our early formative years affect our development and the results are known as Personality Disorders. Other times, one traumatic event is so profound that we respond with symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorders. These conditions and many others, including what we tend to describe as severe mental health disorders, whether Psychosis or Eating Disorders, do not need to be treated only with medications or viewed exclusively as a medical condition. We, human beings, are not only physical but also psychological and spiritual beings and therefore diagnoses cannot be based or “rooted” solely on the physical realm. Only a comprehensive approach, which combines these three elements can give us, not only the true picture of our difficulties and their symptoms but also provide us with the necessary understanding for comprehensive interventions.
Psychotherapy or “talking therapy” – sometimes known as “counselling” is a very useful intervention which can – in certain conditions – replace medications. It aims to explore, with the careful guidance of the therapist, our inner feelings, thoughts and beliefs which lay at the basis of our difficulties and conflicts.
Psychotherapy can be individual but also for couples and families. It then addresses not only the individual but his/her relations with the other significant persons in one’s immediate surroundings and life.
Our consultant psychiatrist and psychotherapist at The Alternative Healthcare is Dr Pablo Jeczmien.
