History of Yoga
The word “yoga” comes from the Sanskrit root “yuj”, which means “to yoke” the spirit and physical body together.
The practice of yoga has evolved over thousands of years to embrace a wide range of styles and disciplines and it is a popular activity for a wide range of people from those with limited flexibility and mobility to athletes, children and seniors. Yoga can be modified to suit all levels of fitness and ability and the classes here at The Alternative Healthcare are suitable for everyone, from complete beginners to those with several years’ experience.
Benefits of Yoga
Yoga has a whole range of benefits, has been proven to lower blood pressure and increases strength and flexibility, whilst energising our bodies and calms our minds.
Regular practice will increase mental and physical awareness, reconnecting you with your body and strengthening your sense of intuition and inner power. This mind and body connection helps you realize that what impact your body has on your mind and emotions, and vice versa.
Yoga can teach you to let go of tension, limiting beliefs, self-imposed barriers, etc. At the physical level you learn how to release tension while holding the poses by using your breath. As an energetic practice you will learn to let go of what you have been holding on to on a deeper level.
The practice of yoga teaches us how to breathe mindfully, helping us release stress and calm the mind. When we concentrate on our breath, our bodies automatically begin to relax, the muscles soften and the mind starts to calm down. Fewer thoughts are produced at slower rates, helping us clear the excess noise. Having a clear mind helps us to make better decisions, feel centered and calm.
Our studio at The Alternative Healthcare offers an exciting and varied array of yoga styles for you to choose from depending on what your interests and abilities are! Feel free to specialise in one or two areas or mix and match.
Additionally we also have leading experts in tai chi, chi kung, meditation and Pilates teaching weekly classes at the centre.

Please ensure that you book on to classes as once they are full we cannot accept drop-in students. If a class has no students enrolled 90 minutes before the start of the class, then it will be cancelled.
