After the festive season, we all need a little help to get rid of the toxins that have built up. Cleansing is a natural way to help the body eliminate toxins which over time can compromise our health. No matter how healthy you are we are constantly being exposed to toxins (air pollution, unfiltered water, medications, non-organic foods, caffeine, alcohol, cosmetics, bodies own toxic waste products) which all put pressure on the liver and compromise the gut.
Symptoms of toxicity Include:
- Excess weight
- Joint pain
- Gas and bloating
- Fatigue and insomnia
- Low energy
- Constipation or irregularity
- Dark circles under the eyes
- Mood swings
History of Cleansing
Cleansing is a rich tradition among humans. At The Alternative Healthcare Centre in Haywards Heath Ayurveda is part of their core belief and is an ancient and natural health-care tradition originating in India over 5000 years ago. Historians attribute detoxification diets to Ayurveda, meaning “The Science of Life”. They have the knowledge of how to live in harmony with our bodies for a healthy, happy, stress free life.
One of the disciplines is Pancha Karma, which includes progressively eliminating certain foods from the diet. The goal of Pancha Karma is to prolong life and prevent disease. According to the ancient practice of Ayurveda, the root cause of almost all disease is the accumulation of toxins that linger in our bodies when we have improper digestion. Cleaning these toxins from our bodies can treat an innumerable list of aliments.
Cleansing at any time of the year will create an excellent foundation for health. However, cleansing with the seasons is a system long established by traditional practices such as Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. We evolved in tune with the seasons so it makes sense to undertake a cleanse at the start of each season. September/October, January/February and April/May.
One of the main ways that the body rids itself of toxins is through the liver. In fact, the liver is one of the hardest working organs in the body. There is no system in the body that does not, to some extent, reply on the liver. It plays a central role in the production of hormones, immune modulators, nutrients, the removal of unhealthy cholesterol, allergens, and used hormones.
Your liver filters all that goes through your blood stream, from those that we ingest to those that we produce naturally. In runs in parallel importance with the digestive tract; together they are the powerhouses of our health.
The Benefits of Cleansing
There are so many benefits of cleansing. As shown above the liver plays such an important role in so many bodily systems if this organ is over loaded ill health can develop. Therefore, if the detoxification process is working at optimum strength the results may be: –
- An increase in energy
- Weight loss
- Stronger Immune System
- Improvement in skin health
- Clearer thinking
- Healthy hair and nails
- Anti-ageing benefits
- Improvement in the sense of Wellbeing
- Balance in hormones
- Improvement in digestion
Foods to Avoid
The foods to eliminate during a cleanse are: Sugar, white flour products, gluten, alcohol, dairy and caffeine. These items are hard to handle substances and in order for the cleanse to work and to allow the body to remove toxins, the body needs to have whole foods with no chemicals, additives or foods that burden the detoxification process.
As mentioned above, the body needs whole foods and lots of water but there are also a number of nutrients and botanicals that can help support the natural detoxification processes. I have listed a few here but there are many more. Milk Thistle, is a liver protectant that works to detoxify toxicants such as alcohol and heavy metals. B vitamins, there are both needed and stored by the Liver. B6 and B12 support the detoxification process. Beetroot provides key fibre for the elimination of toxic build up in the gut. Rich in beta cyanin, Beetroot can support liver function and help prevent the accumulation of fatty deposits.
Here is a beetroot-based drink that is full of goodness for your Liver.
- 16 spinach leaves
- ½ beetroot
- ½ lemon
- 2 apples
- 100ml date nectar
Blitz all the ingredients together and enjoy.
