What to Expect From An Ayurvedic Full Body Massage (Abyangha)
By Jasmina Paul, Ayurvedic Therapist
If you never had one you might be wondering what exactly an Ayurvedic treatment is and how is it different from a regular massage.
Basically, Ayurvedic treatments are designed to bring the mind, body & soul into alignment. By infusing deeply nourishing and warm oils, treatments work on your deep tissues and energy channels (called srotas). Once your body feels nourished and in harmony, mind and spirit naturally follow feelings of peace and enhanced consciousness.
Like me ten years ago, you might feel sceptical about the effectiveness of the Ayurvedic treatments. My advice here is to keep healthy scepticism and try the treatment anyway. I can guarantee you that it will be an experience that you have never tried before. You will notice immediately that unlike any other massage, Ayurvedic massage (abhyangha) can make you feel moved on a much deeper level. And would you not want to experience deeper level of healing if you are committed to finally dealing with anxieties, fertility, arthritis, autoimmune and other health imbalances?
There are many Ayurvedic treatments that serve different purposes and are designed to balance our bodies according to our body type (Vata, Pitta and Kapha). For instance, Udvartana (full body massage scrub) is used to clear Ama (toxins) from the body. Ayurvedic oil baths on the other hand, nourish our bones and tissues. Ayurvedic facials, shirodhara and sensory organ treatments (eg nasya) help with Vata disorders such as anxieties, overactive mind chatter, and migraines. They also improve concentration and prevent premature hair greying.
What to expect from an Ayurvedic Massage (Abyangha)
This deeply relaxing massage is a whole body massage involving energy balancing long strokes and warm oil application. The oils are heated to a comfortable temperature and infused with Ayurvedic herbs suitable for your individual mind-body constitution (dosha). Using warm Ayurvedic oils in massage is a potent contributor towards maintaining harmony and clearing toxins. Due to the extremely small size of the oil molecules, Ayurvedic oils penetrate your tissues deeply and transport the healing properties of nature, directly to the cells of your body.
This deeply relaxing therapy is beneficial for the nervous system and immune system and supports the healing of many disease in the body and mind. Ayurvedic treatments are therapies that support Ayurvedic doctors in healing their patients.
That said, your Ayurveda massage treatment will ideally begin with a consultation. Together with our in house Ayurvedic doctor you will go through a short, completely confidential health and lifestyle consultation prior to your first treatment. This is designed to identify your health concerns along with any needs and expectations. Your consultation will then allow your Ayurvedic therapist to adapt the Ayurveda massage treatment to suit your unique requirements.
Ayurvedic massages last anywhere from 30 to 90 minutes. The oil is heated and applied directly to your skin. You will be covered with soft sheets, blankets & towels throughout the treatment, and only the parts being massaged will be exposed, ensuring you feel warm and secure. Your hair will also come in contact with the oils, which are really nourishing for your skin and hair and aid healing on a deeper tissue level. It is good to keep the oil on your skin for as long as you can and minimum for 2 hours after the treatment.
After your treatment you may feel very relaxed and peaceful, however, sometimes Ayurveda brings to surface emotions and shows us what needs to be healed. Do not be afraid of this process and allow for it to unfold at your own pace.
Your therapist will always try to make you feel relaxed, safe and comfortable throughout your treatment.
Ayurvedic massage is MOST beneficial when combined with a complete Yoga & Ayurveda lifestyle, with conscious choice towards greater well-being, and vitality in your life.
